Document2PDF Pilot – A Handy Convert to PDF Tool

Here is a very simple and handy application that converts from many different document types to Adobe Acrobat pdf files. It’s called Document2pdf Pilot by Two Pilots. They currently support the following file types: CHM, HTML (HTM, SHTML, MHT), TXT, Images (JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG, EMF), MS Word (DOC, DOT, RTF, WPS, WRI), MS Excel (XLS, XLT, XLW), MS PowerPoint (PPT, PPS, POT). Free trial is available and I liked it so much I bought it today.

Try finding an application that can convert .chm files (compiled/compacted help files) to pdf reliably and you will be lost in a sea of inadequate applications. Document2pdf Pilot is the exception and worked as advertised. Not only does it properly build and merge the table of contents (that is the pdf bookmarks), it can also preserve all your links and images! Great software and highly recommended. Just tried it with a series of interlinked html files (89 in total) and it also works great.

The utility does not directly do websites but it does include IE (not v9 though) and FireFox plug-ins to convert webpages to pdf. Just remember to select custom install and select the plug-ins to install. Having trouble with the FireFox plug-in though (using v3.6.x). Will look into it.

Smartphones Smartphones

Looking to replace my good old trusty Palm LifeDrive PDA (modded with 16GB CF Card) with some sort of new Smartphone type of device. So I’ve been looking around. I’m just not a fan of the locked down Apple iPhones or the various WinMobiles out there so I think open is the way I’d like to go. The Palm Pre doesn’t excite me either unless some new hardware should come out soon. There’s allot of buzz around the latest Google Android phones and web tablets which seem to be popping out at ever increasing rates. The most interesting devices being the Motorola DROID (at Engadget) or the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (not out yet) or the HTC Touch Pro2 (at Engadget) (although this is a WinMo it’s specs look good). But what I’m really interested in are these two devices:

Should be good fun to see how this turns out.

Dmitry Retirement from PalmOS World but … 1src Forums

Dmitry Grinberg of PalmPowerups famed programmer announced he is retiring from the world of PalmOS development. See his post at 1src Forums. But he also surprised us all with the announcement that he is now working (or more appropriately has been working) on a new built from scratch OS called DGOS. Which he mentions will be 100% Palm compatible. Very cool.

More hints of his plans can be found here at Brighthand.com (below is a quote)

1. as long as its done in my free time i won it, not vmware
2. you do not need flashable rom. it can bootstrap itself form inside palmos, kick palmos out of memory, and boot
3. the hardware drivers are being written by me (this is why its taking so long)
4. it can run multiple palmos apps at the same time :-)

The current status of this ambitious project can be followed at this DGOS site at dgosblog.blogspot.com

I believe he can do it and I would like to support him in any way I can. Just let me know!

iQcontacts for Palm Devices

Posted in category Palm

Looking for a very good contact manager for your Palm hand held then try out iQcontacts by Penticon Technologies. This is an upgrade from the old familiar PhoneMagic application.

My favorite features are it’s very fast lookups by any field and it’s integration with DateBk5/DateBk6. To do this just change the ‘Addr CreatID’ to PTpm within DateBK’s Preferences -> Split Screen section.

Watch out for review coming soon.

PalmPowerups

PowerSDHC by PalmPowerups is a great application (or more appropriately a driver) for Palm devices that breaks the 2 GB limit and lets you use those nice high capacity SD Cards.

I’ve been using it for over 2 weeks now and it works very well on my LifeDrive. See here PowerSDHC FAQ if you have questions.

No problems found so far and viewing images on a 16GB sdhc card seems to pop-up faster now which supports dmitrygr’s claims that this driver is faster.

So far I’ve tested it on:

  • Panasonic SDHC 4GB Class 4
  • Transcend SDHC 4GB Class 6
  • Transcend SDHC 16GB Class 6

ETen Glofiish X800 & Other News : PDA PLAZA Canada

Looking for a VGA phone with quad band GSM, HSPDA, 3G, GPRS, GPS and FM then check out ETen Glofiish X800 at PDA Plaza. Memory size might be an issue though as it comes with 64MB only.

Here’s a review on Trusted Reviews at E-ten Glofiish X800.

Think that is cool then the Glofiish M800 looks even better with similar specs but includes a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Check out Engadgets blogs on E-Ten devices at E-Ten Category.

If anything these should make HTC wake up and take notice.

Looks like I’ll be moving to a new camp soon if Palm doesn’t wake up. They’ve been sleeping at the wheel for what seems like ages.

Another thing to watch out for is Google’s entrance into the world of mobile phone platforms. They have created a new operating system, middleware and applications which are Linux based and one can write custom applications for in Java. Details are here at Open Handset Alliance. Also, you can checkout out Download Squad’s blog at Google launches Android SDK for more details. So it may be worthwhile to sit and see what happens to the world of mobile phones and PDAs.

Here’s another very interesting phone (that one, one can’t get in North America yet) it’s the Nokia E90 Communicator.
